Principle 3
I respect all human beings and animals.

‘If we lose love and self respect for each other, this is how we finally die.’
- Maya Angelou

Summary: Every human being is different from the other.  But we are also very similar.  Learn to accept and respect others for who they are.  Because similarities should be enjoyed and differences must be respected.  Have an open mind toward humanity and a kind heart toward animals.

Respect and love are integral to living.  Be courteous to everyone you meet regardless of sexual orientation, race, religion, gender/gender identity or expression, national origin, ethnicity, age, disability, view point, or other factors.  If you find that you cannot resolve an argument, end it amicably with a handshake and agree to disagree.  Follow the nonviolent principles of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Junior.  Irrespective of whether you like or dislike somebody, respect them.

In some cultures, the order of respect is: Mother, Father, Teacher, God.

Always love and respect your parents.  Savor your family as wine is, indeed, thicker than water.  Take the effort to repair broken or lost relationships with your family or friends (as friends are your chosen family).  If possible, let the past remain in the past and offer the first olive branch.  If your efforts are rejected, take solace in the fact that you were the bigger person and you gave it your best shot.  As charity begins at home, perpetually practice these principles with your partner.

Be open minded.

Be quick to listen and late to judge.

Be quick to make peace and late to hate.

Always be kind to animals.  Cruelty is a fashion statement we can do without.  Animals deserve the same rights of love and compassion as us.  As President Abraham Lincoln believed, “I am in favor of animal rights as well as human rights. That is the way of a whole human being.”  So widen your circle of tolerance and compassion to embrace all of nature’s creatures.  As many animal shelters are non-profit or government organizations, volunteer at one on weekends – it could be a rewarding and fun experience.

In conclusion, live simply, love seriously, care deeply, respect constantly, think purely, speak kindly, and don’t stress the rest.
